Will It Last For The Holiday?

June is almost over and what an eventful month it has been. We saw a long chain of severe weather almost every day in Colorado. Numerous tornado watches, severe thunderstorm warnings and even tornado warnings for many parts of the state. With these storms we saw gusty winds, heavy rain, damaging hail, funnel clouds and tornadoes! So far, it's the second-wettest June in recorded history with 4.86 inches of rain this month. With a drier weather pattern in place for the last stretch of June, there is only a slight chance that Denver will beat the record 4.96 inches that was set back in 1882.The drier and warmer weather is due to an area of high pressure building in the west. The ridge is farther west than the last high pressure system to move into the Midwest, so folks in the central part of the nation will get a bit of a break from the intense heat they have been experiencing, while the west coast will feel the full effects of summer.
Across the metro area, temperatures will remain in the low 90s for the beginning of the week with only a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms.By the end of the workweek, the ridge of high pressure will start to break down. Denver will see near to normal temperatures return with highs in the mid to upper 80s on both Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately there will also be a better chance of storms heading into the holiday. For the Fourth of July weekend we will see highs in the upper 80s to low 90s with partly cloudy skies and frequent rain showers and thunderstorms from the afternoon into the evening. Stay tuned for more information on the holiday weekend and what the metro area can expect for the big firework shows.Contributed by Weather Interns: Erika Bratten, Jen Kelley, and Travis KnudsenCopyright: Channel Only
