Denver, Co. -- The skies quickly started to cloud up Thursday morning with the leading edge of a cold front moving through the metro area. Temperatures will remain mild in the morning hours, but won't warm much in the afternoon.Moisture will move in behind the front, with scattered showers and storms expected through the afternoon and evening hours. Some areas may see up to 1 inch of rain by Friday. In the high country, this rain may turn to snow above 10,000 feet on Thursday night and Friday morning. Little to no accumulation is expected, but it might be a nice taste of what's to come for folks in the mountains.
Friday will remain unstable with cool temperatures and scattered storms throughout the afternoon hours. Warmer and drier weather will return for the weekend. Temperatures will warm into the 70s both Saturday and Sunday. In the southeast, Hurricane Ike is now moving through the Gulf of Mexico. It is now a Category 2 hurricane with wind speeds around 100 mph. The storm is expected to become a Category 3 in the next 12 to 24 hours. At this point, the National Hurricance Center is forecasting it to make landfall along the Texas coast, some where between Corpus Christi and Galveston.
