Saturday Brings Flooding Rain, Large Hail And A Tornado

DENVER -- The Colorado Rocky Mountains were hit with severe weather Saturday afternoon when storms unloaded rain, hail and even a tornado.The tornado touched down at 2:16 p.m. Saturday at Eleven Mile Canyon Reservoir in Park County. The picturesque reservoir is located at about 8,600 feet above sea level. Tornadoes at that elevation are very rare, but not unheard-of.According to State Park officials the twister moved along the west shore of the lake near Witcher's Cove for about six miles. It knocked boats off of trailers and overturned trailers.
Only minor injuries were reported.Other storms moving off the central mountains of Colorado produced nickel size hail hail and winds over 60 miles per hour.The small mountain town of Westcliffe in Custer County had at least four inches of rain from one storm Saturday afternoon. All the water caused flash flooding in the valley were the town sits between the Sangre De Cristo Mountains to the west and the Wet Mountains to the east.Storms were diminishing Saturday evening and were expected to clear overnight.Another round of showers and thunderstorms are expected Sunday afternoon all along the Rockies. The storms are forecast to move east across Denver and the rest of eastern Colorado by late in the afternoon.A few storms may become severe again Sunday afternoon and evening.Dry weather is expected Monday and Tuesday with only a slight chance of thunderstorms until a storm system moving over Colorado by Wednesday of next week.
