DENVER -- It took all day to get here, but when the storm came it was a big one.A slow moving storm drenched Denver on Friday night, leaving streets flooded, streams swollen and plenty of cars stalled out.The storm moved off the foothills of Jefferson and Douglas counties, just west of Denver, around 6 p.m. Friday. Moving only 11 mph, there was plenty of time for rain to fall throughout much of the metro area.
Early estimates show 2.65 inches of water fell in Denver and 1.50 inches of water fell in Aurora in one hour. In comparison, Denver only had a quarter of an inch of rain for the entire month of July. Ten times that amount fell in just one hour Friday night.Streets were flooded in central and southern Denver and across many southern and eastern metro areas. Dozen of cars, even an ambulance, stalled out on the city roads. In some areas, the water levels came up to the vehicle's grill, or even higher. The storm delayed the Colorado Rockies game against San Diego at Coors Field for about an hour. The field was just on the northern edge of the storm with much lighter rain than a few miles south of the stadium.Runoff pushed several small streams out of their banks in Denver and nearby Aurora. In the mountains west of Denver, mud and rock slides caused some slow traffic on Interstate 70, but no major problems were reported.
