UPDATED: 8:25 am MDT June 13, 2007

After two days of heavy rain across northeast Colorado and southwest Nebraska, residents are looking forward to some sunshine.

Slow-moving thunderstorms dropped heavy rain across the region on Monday and Tuesday, with many locations picking up in excess of 3 inches of precipitation.

A weather observer near Amherst, Colo., in Phillips County, recorded 4.88 inches of rain within a few hours on Monday night.

Two-day rain totals topped 7 inches across eastern Phillips County. A weather station 3 miles south of Venango, Neb. recorded 8.20 inches of rain between Monday and Tuesday.

Water up to 5 feet deep closed Highways 23 and 6 in both directions east of Holyoke on Tuesday.

A portion of the railroad tracks along County Road 51 was washed away by flood waters in eastern Phillips County.

Heavy rains also fell in Logan and Sedgwick counties in northeast Colorado, where field flooding was reported.

Officials in both counties were monitoring area streams and rivers for additional flood threats.

Portions of southwest Neb. were also hit hard by flooding rains.

7NEWS Storm Chaser Tony Laubach documented a flash flood Monday evening while chasing storms in Imperial, Neb.

On Tuesday, Laubach and his fellow storm chaser, Jon Van de Grift, found a woman attempting to escape a vehicle stranded in rising flood waters in Ogallala, Neb.

The motorist was able to climb out of the car's window and wade through knee-deep waters to Van de Grift's SUV.

Ogallala streets looked more like rivers on Tuesday as nearly 3 inches of rain fell. Most streets had upward of 2 feet of water flowing down them during the peak of the storm.

Forecasters call for warmer and drier weather to move into the water-logged region starting Wednesday and lasting through Sunday.
