Bitter Cold To Stick Around

UPDATED: 10:13 am MST February 2, 2007

So we have good news and bad news.

Good news -- spring is just around the corner, according to Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog in Pennsylvania who didn't see his shadow this morning.

The bad news for those who can't wait for winter to be over is that the bitter cold air blasting Colorado will stick around for a few days.

Most locations will not see daytime highs climb out of the single digits on Friday.

Before sunrise on Friday morning, temperatures dipped into the teens below zero across much of northeast Colorado, including Denver. Denver set a new record low at 4:44 a.m. when the temperature dropped to -18 degrees. (Click here to read more on that story.)

Winds blowing at 10 to 20 mph drove the wind chill values as low as -40 degrees from Denver to Goodland, Kan. Friday morning.

A wind chill advisory was issued until 10 a.m. Friday for all of northeast Colorado, including Denver and Fort Collins.

Residents were urged to use extreme caution and delay outdoor plans Friday if at all possible. Wind chill temperatures were expected to remain below zero most of the day.

Temperatures Friday night are once again expected to drop below zero thanks to clear skies and fresh snow.

Saturday doesn't look much better, with with high temperatures in the teens and lows in the single digits for the metro area. If you're heading up to the mountains to ski, expect lingering snow showers with highs in the single digits and teens, with lows ranging from 0 to 10 below zero.

A warming trend will take shape for the last half of the weekend. Highs will climb into the 20s, with lows in the single digits.

It will be a slow climb, but by the middle of next week, daytime highs could once again reach 40 degrees.
