More Snow Coming Our Way

Snow Expected After 3 P.M.

POSTED: 8:40 am MST February 1, 2007
UPDATED: 9:34 am MST February 1, 2007

A cold front will race through Colorado Thursday afternoon, reinforcing the cold air in place and bringing more snow.

Snow is expected to develop during the mid-afternoon hours and may impact the Thursday evening rush hour. It will have an affect on the Friday morning commute.

A burst of moderate snow is expected late Thursday evening into the overnight hours, with 2 to 5 inches of new snow in the Denver metropolitan area by mid-morning on Friday.

Some areas will see 6 or more inches from this storm in the foothills, along the Palmer Divide south of Denver, and in isolated pockets of the Denver metro.

Bitter Cold Coming

The snow will rapidly end by the afternoon hours on Friday with clearing skies and sunshine expected. But despite seeing some sun, it will be frigid as very cold air settles into eastern Colorado.

Expect widespread sub-zero temperatures by Saturday morning in locations from Aspen to Kansas. Denver is expected to be around 7 degrees below zero.

In addition to the cold, strong winds are expected to pass over Colorado Friday into Saturday creating blustery conditions. Gusty winds will drive wind chill temperatures for much of the region down as low as 15 to 30 degrees below zero.

The wind chill is the temperature that exposed skin will feel if unprotected when outdoors.

At an air temperature of 7 degrees below zero, a wind of just 10 m.p.h. will make the wind chill, or apparent temperature, a dangerous 25 degrees below zero.

By Friday night, winds in the Denver area could blow as high as 20 mph, with gusts even higher.

Blowing snow may become a problem as these winds develop, especially in areas prone to these conditions, such as on the eastern plains and in the northwest Denver metro area, between Boulder, Golden and Arvada.
