DENVER -- There is nothing like a little snow to get you in the holiday spirit; Irving Berlin even wrote about this in his 1942 hit.Although the song has been recorded hundreds of times, the most popular version is the classic by Bing Crosby. The song White Christmas was first featured in the 1942 film Holiday Inn, and later in the 1954 movie White Christmas.Many Denverites dream of a white Christmas year after year, and sometimes it comes true. But more times than not, one must jump on Interstate 70 and head west into the mountains for the true experience.
So how do you define a white Christmas? Let's define a true white Christmas in Denver as having at least one inch of snow on the ground. This puts our chance at 35 percent.If we define white Christmas as having a measurable snowfall, meaning at least a tenth of an inch accumulation, then our chance drops to only 10 percent.The good folks at the National Weather Service office in Boulder took the time to assemble a climatology of white Christmas Days in Denver since 1900.Since then, only 37 days have met the criteria of having at least an inch of snow on the ground.
