Vegas Q&A: Do Reviews Generate Hate Mail?

POSTED: 1:18 p.m. EDT April 16, 2004

Question: When you review a restaurant or a show and give it bad review, do you ever hear from the people you critiqued? Do they ever get irate or challenge your opinion?

Doug in Roseville, Minn.

Ask Rick

Answer: Oh, yes, I hear from people when I give bad reviews. Most of the time they are respectful, and often I get invited back when a show, restaurant or hotel makes some sort of change that the people responsible think might make a difference in my review.

Occasionally, however, I get a lot of grief for the things I say. There is one show (which shall go nameless) that I gave a bad review to and I got hate mail -- there was actual hate involved -- from someone associated with the show. It was unbelievable.

But most of the negative feedback I get is from the public and not from people associated with whatever I've reviewed. People are not afraid to tell me my opinion sucks. The good news is that for every one of those letters, I usually get five more from people who completely agree.

The one thing I always try to stress is that they are just opinions. Just because I or another reviewer like or dislike something doesn't mean you will have the same opinion. I recommend checking out as many different sources as possible and look for a consensus; if a lot of reviewers say, "It's great," there's a better chance you'll think the same.
