Vegas Q&338;A: Which Old-Style Show Is Best?

Question: After my first visit to Las Vegas last October, I absolutely fell in love with the city. My girlfriends and I saw Celine Dion, "O," and "Lord of the Dance". I'm returning again this year with my mother and sister, and we are planning on attending some of the tried-and-true Vegas favorites. This will include Wayne Newton, of course, and one of the elaborate, showgirl review shows. Can you recommend one or two for us to consider? Also, which hotels offer backstage tours?

Answer: The two best showgirl reviews are Folies Bergere at the Tropicana and Jubilee at Bally's. They are good, old-fashioned Vegas shows and both are quite entertaining in their own way. By that I mean they don't break any new ground and can't possibly be compared to things like "Mystere" and Celine Dion, but they get the job done and harken back to the Vegas of yore. Of the two, I prefer Folies, but there is a better than average chance that the Tropicana, where Folies is performed, may be closing sometime this spring or summer, so Jubilee might be your only choice when you visit.
Jubilee is also the show that offers the backstage tour. You can get more information on that on Bally's Web site.
A warning about the Wayne Newton show: although it is a fun bit of Vegas cheese, you have to go into it with the right attitude. Almost everyone who has seen it agrees that Newton's voice is not what it used to be, so the show suffers on that level. But for old-fashioned Vegas showmanship, he's still Mr. Las Vegas. Go with your sense of irony intact!
Gladys Knight and Clint Holmes also put on terrific, old-fashioned headliner-style shows with plenty of good music and laughs, so you may want to consider those as well.
