ARVADA, Colo. – AAA Colorado officials say they're expecting a record-breaking travel trend over the Labor Day weekend, despite a small spike in gas prices.
AAA Colorado said drivers should be prepared to pay 20-cents to 25-cents more per gallon of gas this holiday period.
"We always prepare, we put a little bit of money away. Be ready and you know, pay that extra for gas," Fernando Lozano said.
Denver7 caught up with campers who planned to spend their Saturday morning on busy Colorado roads.
“Tents, fishing poles, the air mattress, fishing gear,” Lozano said as he pointed to the gear in the bed of his truck.
Fernando, his family, and their dog Ralph made a last stop at the Arvada Sam’s Club before they trekked three hours up the mountain.
The Lozano family added to the growing number of traveling Coloradans. AAA Colorado said more than 600,000 people would drive more than 50-miles from home this holiday weekend.
“That’s a lot—a lot of people. It’s crazy!” Lozano said.
The anticipated holiday traffic forced William Nagle and his beagle, Anne, to take the back roads.
“Oh! If you take the highway, it’s going to be pretty bad,” Nagle said.
He said the crowds and the extra costs associated with the holiday weekend aren’t surprising to those who are like him, and make the Labor Day Weekend trip often.
“It’s usually a lot of good fellowship, a lot of good stories and just a lot of fun,” Nagle said.
Both men said the traffic delays are nothing compared to the fun in store.
Lozano added, “Traffic Monday is going to be crazy, but again, we’re ready!”
