Passenger dies in Highway 36 wrong-way crash

Victim ID'd as Vincent Michael James Gibson

WESTMINSTER, Colo. - Eastbound lanes of U.S. 36 are open again at Wadsworth Boulevard after a wrong-way driver caused a deadly crash, according to Westminster police.

The crash happened shortly before 3 a.m. near Sheridan Boulevard.

A red Ford SUV was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes and hit a white Acura coupe head on, said Cheri Spottke with the Westminster Police Department.

The male passenger of the wrong way vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.  Police said the victim was not wearing a seat belt.  He was identified as 25-year-old Vincent Michael James Gibson.

The driver of the Ford and two people in the Acura were transported to the hospital, Spottke said. Their condition is unknown at this time.

"We do believe there is potentially alcohol and or drugs involved," Spottke said.

The full investigation by the Westminster Major Accident Reconstruction will take several days because of the severity of the accident.
