DENVER -- The whole point of the express lanes on I-25 and US-36 are to give drivers an escape from gridlock. But authorities say many people that use them aren't following the rules.
Colorado State Patrol officials said they issued nearly 900 tickets to drivers over a two-month period for speeding, not paying the toll, or illegally crossing the double lines to enter and exit the lanes.
"People swerve in and out of it all the time like over the double lines," one driver told Denver7.
"You know you're supposed to come in it and stay," another driver added. "People go in and out all the time."
It only took a few minutes for a Denver7 crew to see three examples of that along US 36 in Broomfield. Keep in mind, a citation for something like that could range up to a $1,000 fine and points on your license.
So, CSP officials said they're stepping up their patrols to stop this type of swerving in the name of safety.
Signs above the lanes now read "Cross the Line, Pay the Fine." The goal is to decrease the amount of illegal and unsafe activities along the lanes that were created to ease headaches, not create more.
