DENVER - Interstate 25 will be closed southbound near US 6 overnight Friday into Saturday and Saturday into Sunday.
The two closures are part of the preparation for the I-25 Gap Lane Project, the Colorado Department of Transportation explained. That project, which will cause additional closures in both directions next weekend, will install an extra northbound lane by narrowing all existing lanes and shoulders.
Friday night, from 10 p.m. to midnight, three lanes will be closed. During that time, CDOT suggests an optional detour west onto US 6 to Federal Boulevard, south to 5th Avenue, back onto eastbound 6th and then reentering the southbound side of the interstate.
At midnight, however, the fourth lane of the interstate and the eastbound 5th Avenue ramp onto eastbound US 6 will also need to close. The eastbound and westbound US 6 on-ramps to southbound I-25 will also close at the same time. Therefore, traffic will need to take Federal to either Colfax or Alameda to reenter I-25. This will last through 7 a.m. Saturday.
Saturday night, the full closure will begin at 10 p.m. and last until 7 a.m. Sunday.
Additionally, from 9 p.m. Saturday through 7 a.m. Sunday, the two left lanes on northbound I-25 will also be closed between Alameda and US 6.
