Interstate 70 reopened Tuesday morning after a mudslide forced officials to shut it down at the Hanging Lake tunnel Monday evening.

Although the closure was originally supposed to last a few hours, the highway through the Glenwood Canyon had been closed since 8 p.m. Monday night.

After more than nine hours, crews cleared a Volswagen Beetle-sized boulder that tumbled on to the highway and pushed away mud up to four feet thick that had cascaded onto the roadway during Monday evening's heavy rain.

No vehicles were caught in the rockslide and no one was injured.

CDOT reopened westbound lanes about 5:35 a.m. Eastbound lanes reopened about 45 minutes later, but CDOT said some mud remained on the road in both directions and urged motorists to drive carefully.
