DENVER -- Traffic was backed up for miles on northbound Interstate 25 Monday morning because crews had to shut down several lanes to remove a programmable text message board that was damaged overnight.
Northbound I-25 was backed up from Quincy Boulevard to C-470, and traffic on the Interstate 225 interchange was also at a standstill.
Authorities said a construction truck working on the T-REX expansion project hit the sign about 4 a.m., leaving the large, heavy electric board dangling precariously above traffic. Work crews moved in equipment to stabilize the sign until it could be removed.
Traffic was reduced to one lane on northbound I-25 because of
that equipment. T-REX officials later ordered that portion of the
interstate shut down entirely.
Vehicles are now moving through the area slowly, but the two
right lanes of I-25 just north of Interstate 225 could remain
closed much of the morning.
The closure comes as some Denver business owners express frustration with
detours and shifting street closures brought on by T-REX construction.
