Weekend Ramp Traction Enhancement Project In Aurora

Delays Expected On The Ramp From Northbound Parker Road To Southbound I-225

Starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 6 and continuing until 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 9, one lane of the ramp from northbound Parker Road to southbound I-225 will be closed to allow crews to install a new traction enhancement material on the flyover ramp.

“It is essential for us to get this product in place before the winter so we can test it's effectiveness, but in order to do that, we must have warm temperatures to pave,” said Colorado Department of Transportation Resident Engineer Abe Lavassani. “The snowy weather has prevented us from completing this work, so we need to take advantage of the warm weather while we can.”

Over the weekend, only one lane of the ramp from northbound Parker Road to southbound I-225 will be open and delays are expected. As a detour route, drivers can take northbound Parker Road to Peoria Street and turn left to access southbound I-225.

This weekend’s work will apply the new traction enhancement material to one lane of the flyover ramp. Crews will have to work one more weekend to pave the second lane of the ramp.

The traction enhancement product contains rocks that will hold liquid de-icer in the pavement longer than the typical pavement and also provide for better traction. With this material, CDOT crews can apply liquid de-icers to the bridge and the liquid will work longer before crews have to retreat.

Another type of traction material was just recently applied to the flyover bridge from southbound I-25 to northbound I-225 and consists of an epoxy treatment that will help protect the new concrete bridge deck from the salts that are found in de-icers. In addition, the treatment included granite chips that will enhance traction.
