Ski season may be on its way out, but here in Colorado we stay active year-round! Still, all that skiing and cycling can take a toll on our knees.

That's an issue an elite Colorado athlete is trying to resolve by incorporating a new low-impact way to hit the trail this summer.

Kara Lubieniecki recently competed in the Olympic Marathon Trials in Los Angeles. And while she's only 27-years-old, this Colorado native is already thinking about keep her knees in good condition. So, instead of running daily she's Ellipti-going.

“It [ElliptiGo] also allows you to keep up the work when you're injured as well, so you don't have to miss out on as much training,” she said.

The ElliptiGO ARC is like running or biking with less impact, Lubieniecki said.

“This gives you a nice running motion without the impacts, so it's almost the perfect cross-training tool,” she said.

Elliptical bikes used to be a novelty -- and were very expensive and pretty big. Now, they're getting smaller and more affordable.

“It is similar to a bike. You have to balance it a little bit, but it steadies itself pretty easily,” said Lubieniecki.

Meb Keflezighi agrees.

At 40-years old, Keflezighi will be the oldest U.S. Olympic runner in history when he hits the starting line of the men's marathon in Rio this summer. He attributes much of his ability to continue competing at this level to elliptical cycling.
