DENVER -- Most of the time, personal blogs are harmless. They're daily musings about a person's life, hobbies, habits, friends and family. But now, there's more evidence that if you write about work you might find yourself out of work, that is, if you're not writing very nice things about your job and your coworkers.USA Today is reporting that more people are getting fired for their blogs. Delta Airlines, Google and Wells Fargo are just some of the major companies that have fired or suspended employees for what they've said in their personal blogs. If a worker makes the company look bad or irresponsible or if they've talked about a new product that isn't yet ready to launch or an in issue that's copyrighted or a trade secret, it's grounds for dismissal.
But there's also a fine line that companies tread. Some companies don't want to stifle good blogs because they generate Internet buzz about the company that you just can't buy. Also, it may seem like an invasion of privacy since blogs are usually done from home and in a worker's spare time. However, because many companies don't have blogging guidelines, you just never know if you're breaking any rules. One simple rule to follow is to never write about your job and post it on the Internet unless your boss knows about it.About 20,000 blogs are created daily so even if you don't have a blog now, you might have one in the future and it's something to think about. The trend is definitely uncharted legal territory.Additional Resources:
