POSTED: 8:48 am MST February 22, 2005

The more you use them, the more you realize that computers can be a security risk. But there's a way to make your computer safer to use, and it won't cost you anything.

"We're talking about the best-selling program to identify, trap and wipe out 'spyware' on your computer," said Consumer Champ Bill Clarke.

Spyware could be on your computer, generating junk ads, or giving some unscrupulous business information on which Web sites you're viewing, even your credit card numbers and passwords.

"The most malicious forms of spyware are the ones that are growing the fastest," said David Moll, the CEO of Webroot.com.

The Boulder company Webroot makes Spy Sweeper, a $30 software program that PC Magazine called "the best defense against a rising tide of spyware."

"The heart of the system is a sophisticated computer called Phileas," said Moll. "Right now we're scanning more than 650 million sites a day, looking for spyware on the Internet."

"Spy Sweeper reports regularly to its customers and helps keep computer information where it belongs," said Clarke.

To try the program free for 60 days, go to the the Webroot.com Web site.
