Weld County Puts Sex Offender Registry Online

Other Law Enforcement Agencies Require You To Drive To Them

Sex offenders are required to register with the local law enforcement when they move into town. In turn, those agencies are required to keep a list of offenders living in the area and make that list available to the public.

But it hasn't always been easy to obtain this list. In some cases you had to drive all the way to the sheriff's department or police headquarters to flip through the heavy binder filled with names, pictures and addresses of the sex offenders in the area. Or you can request to be mailed a sex offender list -- but it would cost you anywhere from $2 to $10.

But one local jurisdiction has made it as simple as the click of a mouse.

Weld County covers more space than any other county in Colorado. Before if you wanted to look at the sex offender registry, you had to drive to the sheriff's office. But now they've put all of that information online and you can access it for free through http://maps.co.weld.co.us/.

The Weld County Sheriff's Department has created a map of where registered sex offenders live in Weld County. You can zoom in and even get as close to see what neighborhood.

If you click on the red pin that's on the map, you get the picture of the registered sex offender and his address.

Weld County is one of the first local agencies in the state to make its sex offender registry accessible online and it is pretty sensitive about who accesses this information. Before you can get to the map, the site registers your IP address and takes your name and address to that confirm that you live in Weld County.

The site also stresses that you cannot use any of this information to harass a person or inflict harm.

The Colorado Bureau of Information also keeps an online sex offender registry, but they only keep a registry of violent sexual offenders in the state or those with repeat offenses. Weld County's database, on the other hand, lists them all.
