The organizers of the BolderBOULDER have set a goal to make the race more sustainable. They've teamed up with University of Colorado Recycling to make the dream come true.
To make it happen, the planning must begin months before the race. The organizers must work with vendors to encourage the use of recyclable materials.
They've also planned for compostable stations at each aid station along the 10k route.
Lastly, the volunteers who clean up after the race will be separating anything recyclable from any other trash.
Total waste collected from the race last year was 36,000 pounds. Of that, 74 percent or 27,000 pounds was diverted to recycling instead of going to a landfill.
