Glendale, CO - Infinity Park and the Glendale men's sevens program are one of six locations nationwide to be selected by USA Rugby to host the first ever Olympic Development Academy (ODA) . The ODAs are part of USA Rugby's larger Olympic Development Program initiative launched earlier this year .The overarching goal is to strategically identify, develop and prepare a large pool of potential Eagles to face off against world-class competitors at the 2016 Summer Olympic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The initiative is a first-of-its-kind effort in the United States and places rugby, the Glendale coaching staff and facilities on the front lines of player development. Once selected, an applicant may attend the academy of his choice to participate in the 10- month program . In all, the Glendale program has 18 men- mostly current Raptors ready to work with Andre Snyman and Dave Williams to hone their skills in hopes of earning the opportunity to try out for the Eagles in Chula Vista ,Calif.
"What sets the Glendale ODA apart from other programs is our quality coaching staff and existing infrastructure," said Director of Rugby Operations Mark Bullock . "Our coaches strive to build meaningful relationships with each player, getting to know them as individuals, in order to help them set goals and succeed . Academy participants will also have the benefit of our training center, practice field and recovery facilities ."
ODA participants are to compete in 50 seven-a-side matches per year, including the upcoming Serevi RugbyTown Sevens tournament to be held in Glendale in August. The players will also receive specially developed training programs, video analysis and frequent interaction with the USA Eagles Sevens staff .
"Our biggest hurdle thus far has been providing athletes with enough information on job opportunities and housing to relocate to the area," said head coach Andre Snyman. "Dave Williams and I have a solid plan in place to help the guys take their skills to the next level, and for them to become fitter and stronger players overall."
Other ODA locations include Chicago, Seattle and San Diego, which will all be managed by Serevi Rugby, and Long Beach and Columbus, which will be managed by the Tigers .
