Patriots release QB Tim Tebow

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots have released quarterback Tim Tebow, he confirmed Satuday on his Twitter account.
Tebow, who signed with the Patriots in June, struggled to find consistency throughout the preseason. He never seriously threatened Ryan Mallett for the backup job behind Tom Brady.
The third-string quarterback completed 6 of 11 passes for 91 yards with two touchdowns Thursday night, one interception and four sacks in a 28-20 win over the New York Giants.
The Broncos drafted Tebow in the first round, as the 25th overall pick, in 2010. Tebow became the team's starting quarterback in the middle of the 2011-2012 season after the team faltered under quarterback Kyle Orton.
Tebow led the team to the AFC West title and a victory in the playoffs against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The next week, though, Tebow was smothered by the New England Patriots, who easily eliminated the Broncos 45-10.
Weeks later, Elway said Tebow was the team's starting quarterback going into training camp. However, that changed two months later when the Broncos signed Peyton Manning.
In March 2012, the Broncos confirmed they had traded Tebow and a seventh-round pick to the Jets for the NY's fourth-round pick and a sixth-round pick.
Things did not go well for Tebow in New York. Tebow barely played for the Jets last season. "An absolute mess," is the way recently retired special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff described it.
Tebow went from being considered a key part of the Jets’ offense to almost non-existent. Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano didn't know how to use him effectively, and Tebow wasn't particularly productive when he got his few snaps in the wildcat-style formation. He made his biggest mark on special teams as the personal punt protector, and did all he could to hide his frustration at not playing. But the numbers said it all: a mere 102 yards rushing and 6-of-8 passing for 39 yards. And, the most damning stat of all: zero touchdowns.
Tebow didn't even get a chance when Mark Sanchez struggled so badly that he was benched for the first time in his career. Instead of going with Tebow, the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart, Ryan went with third-stringer Greg McElroy.
Tebow was released from the Jets on August 29.
Other veterans cut from the Patriots were defensive end Marcus Benard, wide receiver Johnathan Haggerty and linebacker Mike Rivera.
