A college football player spent Saturday evening behind bars after punching a referee during a game in Ventura, California.

The Ventura County Star reported that offensive lineman Bernard Schirmer, a freshman from Mount San Antonio College, punched the referee when officials were trying to separate players during an argument. Schirmer was ejected in the third quarter for the incident.

Following the game, police reviewed the incident and arrested Schirmer on suspicion of battery, the Star reported.

“I was on the bench talking and I heard everyone going crazy so I jumped up and saw him on the ground,” Ventura College quarterback Jake Luton told the Star. “That’s terrible. There’s no place for that in football.”

Ventura College defeated Schirmer's Mount San Antonio College 34-29.
