BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Colorado men's basketball team will participate in the 2013 NCAA Tournament as a No. 10 seed in the East Region. The Buffaloes will play a second round game against No. 7 Illinois on Friday, March 22, in Austin, Texas.
The winner of Friday's game will face the winner of No. 2 Miami and No. 15 Pacific in a third round game Sunday, March 24. Game times have yet to be determined.
This will be the 12th NCAA Tournament appearance for Colorado and first back-to-back trips in 50 years (1961-62 & 1962-63). The Buffaloes are 10-13 all-time in their NCAA Tourney history with two Final Fours (1942 & '55). Head Coach Tad Boyle is the first CU head coach since Sox Walseth to lead the Buffs to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
Colorado and Illinois have met just four times, with the Illini holding a 3-1 edge in the series. The two last played in 1987, with Illinois winning in Champaign, 69-65, on Jan. 31, 1987, and later that year, 86-68 in the return game on Dec. 30, which was played in Denver as part of a doubleheader in the Mile High Classic at McNichols Sports Arena. CU has played Miami, Fla., just one time (a 73-66 win at Miami on Jan. 3, 1957); the Buffaloes have never played Pacific.
Colorado (21-11, 10-8 Pac-12, fifth) and Illinois (22-12, 8-10 Big 10, seventh) had one common opponent this year – Southern California. Illinois beat them 94-64 in Champaign in December, the Buffs beat them 66-60 in Boulder in January. The Illini were 2-1 against NCAA teams in non-conference play, while the Buffaloes were 1-1.
