DENVER - The Denver Broncos have voted to make receiver Wes Welker the team's newest captain. He replaces offensive tackle Ryan Clady, who went on injured reserve with a foot injury.
Welker, a former New England Patriot, signed a 2-year deal with Denver during the offseason. In the first two games of this season he tallied 12 receptions for 106 yards. Three of the receptions were touchdowns, including two in the season opener against Baltimore.
Clady suffered a Lisfranc joint tear in his left foot during the closing moments of the Broncos 41-23 win against the New York Giants. Clady will need surgery to repair the injury.
Wednesday, the Broncos announced they signed free agent tackle Winston Justice to replace Clady.
