An alleged incident with police in Florida over the summer that played into the decision of Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall to kneel during the National Anthem before games is being investigated by Miami police.

Marshall has talked about an alleged run-in with Miami police on the night of July 4, when he said officers handcuffed him and threatened him with a Taser. Marshall said he was with acquaintances at a restaurant in the busy Bayside area of downtown Miami where there were reports of a shooting. As shown in images and video taken from the scene, chaos ensued as patrons fled and police raced to the scene.

Marshall said an unidentified woman was directing traffic and ordered police to stop him. Marshall said officers rushed toward him, handcuffed him and threatened to Taser him for resisting. Marshall said he sat in the back of the police car when another officer radioed in and said to release him.

“They told me, ‘Look, we’re not going to take you in as long as you keep this between us,'” Marshall said.

Miami police told The Denver Post on Thursday that an investigation is open and that they could not comment or provide further details until it is closed.
