Matt Duchene signs a 5-year contract extension with the Colorado Avalanche

DENVER - Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Duchene has agreed to a 5-year contract extension, the team announced Thursday.

Duchene, a native of Haliburton, Ontario, was selected by the Avalanche during the first round of the 2009 NHL draft. Since then, he's played in 266 games and scored 82 goals.

"I have worn this uniform with pride in my first four professional seasons in Denver, and I appreciate the organization believing in me for the long-term future," Duchene said in a statement provided by the team.

"Matt already is and will be a big part of our team's nucleus for the long term," said Avalanche Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic.
