DENVER - With the Colorado Avalanche knocked out of the playoffs, their budding star will play for the Team Canada at the World Championships.
MacKinnon, 18, was one of three players added to Canada’s world’s roster Sunday, along with Brayden Schenn and Matt Read of the Philadelphia Flyers, according to The Canadian Press.
MacKinnon will meet with the team in Zurich on Monday. The IIHF World Championships are set to begin on Friday, as Canada plays against France at Chizkovka Arena.
The Avalanche’s first overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft scored 24 goals in his rookie season. In the playoffs against the Wild, he scored twice including the game-winning goal in Game 5.
