Sakic says defenseman will add depth to team

DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche signed free agent defenseman Andre Benoit to a one-year contract.

New Avalanche coach Joe Sakic said Benoit, who spent last year with the Ottawa Senators, will add depth to the blue line.

Benoit scored 10 points with three goals in 33 games with the Senators in 2013. He has 11 points in 41 career games.

Colorado also announced it signed six other players on Friday. The Avalanche signed defenseman Nick Holden to a two-year contract, and defenseman Nate Guenin, forward Guillaume Desbiens and forward J.T. Wyman each to one-year contracts.

Colorado also resigned forward David Van Der Gulik, who played nine games with the Avalanche this season, to a one-year deal, and forward Colin Smith to a three-year, entry-level contract.
