NFL Preseason Preview - Dallas (0-0) At Arizona (0-0)

POSTED: 7:37 pm MDT August 11, 2005

Cardinal fans will receive their first glimpse of quarterback Kurt Warner in the home whites on Saturday evening, as Warner leads his Arizona team into battle against Dallas in the 2005 preseason lid- lifter for each team. Warner is attempting to revive his career in the desert after three mostly lackluster seasons with the Rams and Giants. Since winning his second of two NFL MVP awards in 2001, Warner has thrown just 10 touchdown passes versus 16 interceptions over the past three campaigns. The 34-year-old quarterback started the first nine games of the 2004 season in a Giants uniform, amassing a 5-4 record before being benched in favor of Eli Manning. Warner is expected to receive stiff competition throughout training camp from incumbent Arizona quarterback Josh McCown, who started for the Cardinals over parts of the past two seasons.

Another intriguing battle in Cardinals camp centers around the running back situation, as rookie J.J. Arrington (California) is attempting to soar to the top of a depth chart that also includes holdovers Marcel Shipp and Troy Hambrick. Hambrick could miss the Dallas game due to a foot injury. At receiver, Anquan Boldin is suffering with a broken nose and could be held out. On defense, Arizona fans will be eager to get a look at cornerback and first- round draft choice Antrel Rolle (Miami (FL)), who ended a contract holdout earlier this week and is expected to see some time against the Cowboys. Also making their Cardinals debut on Saturday will be linebacker Orlando Huff and Chike Okeafor, a pair of offseason free agent acquisitions from Seattle.

The Cowboys will unveil new starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe for the first time on Saturday night. Bledsoe, who played for Dallas head coach Bill Parcells for four seasons in New England (1993-96) and most recently started with the Bills (2002-04), is expected to play about a third of the game before yielding to backups Tony Romo and Drew Henson. But the bigger story for the Cowboys may be on defense, where a revamped lineup will feature players such as cornerbacks Anthony Henry and Aaron Glenn, as well as first-round draft choice and outside linebacker Demarcus Ware, for the initial time. Though those players are expected to be in action, new defensive tackles Jason Ferguson (ankle) and Marcus Spears (knee) are not expected to play against the Cardinals. Ferguson and Spears join offensive players such as fullback Darian Barnes (ankle) on the list of those being held out for precautionary reasons.

Arizona has won its only two preseason meetings with Dallas all-time, including a 13-0 victory in the last such matchup, prior to the 2003 campaign. The Cowboys own a 53-27-1 advantage in the regular season series with their former NFC East rival, and were 23-7 home winners when the clubs last met, during 2003. The Cardinals won the only all-time postseason meeting between the two, a 20-7 win in a 1998 NFC First-Round Playoff.
