Andruw Jones, Mark Teixeira Top Guns In HR Derby

New 'World' Format Adopted

POSTED: 9:24 pm MDT July 10, 2005

Atlanta Braves outfielder Andruw Jones and Texas Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira lead a prestigious contingent for the 2005 Home Run Derby, which will take place Monday night at Detroit's Comerica Park.

There is a new format for the tournament this year, as the eight participants will each represent a different part of the world. It's also being used to promote the World Baseball Classic, which will be held next spring.

Jones, who will represent Curacao, has 27 homers this year. That is tied with Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee for the major league lead.

Teixeira, who will represent the United States, tops the American League with 25 round-trippers.

There will be three rounds to the event, which is in its 20th year. There is another change in addition to the eight-man field, as a Golden Home Run Ball will be used after each batter's ninth out, no matter how many times it takes to get to the 10th out. Since 2000, there have been 37 homers hit in the event after a batter has had nine outs.

Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada beat out Lance Berkman of the Houston Astros to take the 2004 Home Run Derby at Houston's Minute Maid Park.

The following is a breakdown of each competitor in Monday's Home Run Derby, which will start at 8 p.m.(et).

Bobby Abreu (Venezuela) - A .307 hitter this season, he is the first Philadelphia Phillies rightfielder to be elected as a starter for Tuesday's All-Star Game since Del Ennis in 1951 (first outfielder since Lenny Dykstra in 1995). Abreu, who has a team-leading 18 homers this year, needs two more to become the third player in major league history with seven consecutive 20 HR/20 SB seasons. Only the Bonds family has done it more times.

Jason Bay (Canada) - The Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder has hit 16 homers this season, 12 of which have come on the road. Bay was especially strong in June, hitting .337 with 15 RBI, although May (9) was his big home run month.

Hee-Seop Choi (Korea) - A first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Choi has belted 13 homers this season, but has only a .236 average. However, his 6-5, 240-pound frame screams of power. He smashed six homers from June 10-12, marking just the 16th time in big league history a player has homered six times in three games.

Andruw Jones (Curacao) - Jones broke the Braves' franchise record for June homers with his 13th on the 29th, passing Eddie Mathews, who had 12 in 1955. Jones was named the NL Player of the Month for June after hitting .317 with 26 RBI and a .733 slugging percentage.

Carlos Lee (Panama) - The Milwaukee Brewers leftfielder has 22 homers in his first National League season. He also has 76 RBI, which is the most by a Brewer in the first half in team history.

David Ortiz (Dominican Republic) - The Boston Red Sox designated hitter crushed a mammoth home run as a reserve in last year's All-Star Game in Houston, and Big Papi received more than 4.1 million votes, more than any other player in all of baseball this year. He has 21 homers, which is one shy of Manny Ramirez for the team lead this season. Ortiz was eliminated in the first round of the HR Derby last year after hitting three homers.

Ivan Rodriguez (Puerto Rico) - The hometown favorite for the competition as the catcher for the Detroit Tigers, Rodriguez has just six homers this season. Pudge has struggled of late with a jammed left pinkie. He went one month (May 3 - June 3) without a homer.

Mark Teixeira (United States) - The 25-year-old is off to a spectacular start this season and was elected as the first Texas Ranger first baseman ever to start an All-Star Game. He is just the 30th player in major league history with at least 20 homers in each of first three full seasons and the first since Albert Pujols from 2001-2003.
