NCAA Game Summary - Troy State At South Carolina

Syvelle Newton rushed for 18 yards and a score on 11 carries and threw for another 98 yards, leading the South Carolina Gamecocks to a 17-7 victory over the Troy State Trojans in non-conference action from Williams-Brice Stadium.

Newton finished the game 10-of-14 with an interception, as the Gamecocks (3-1) won their second straight game. Dondrial Pinkins also saw time under center, completing 6-of-10 pass attempts for 101 yards and an interception. Troy Williams was the team's main target with six catches that went for 105 yards.

DeWhitt Betterson paced the Trojans (2-2) in defeat with 50 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Signal caller Aaron Leak struggled greatly in the contest, completing just 9-of-21 passes for only 108 yards and two interceptions.

South Carolina grabbed the first lead of the contest with a Cory Boyd three- yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter.

The Trojans knotted the game at 7-7 late in the opening frame behind a Betterson three-yard touchdown scamper.

Josh Brown's 40-yard field goal represented the only points in the second quarter, giving the Gamecocks a 10-7 edge at the break.

South Carolina extended its lead to 17-7 with a Newton six-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. The Gamecocks' defense than stepped up, holding Troy State scoreless the rest of the way for the 10-point victory.

The Gamecocks racked up 331 total yards of offense in the contest, while holding Troy State to just 207 total yards.
