Colorado high school rugby teams will be battling for the girls state championships at Infinity Park starting at noon on Saturday, Nov. 5.
All-state selections have been named and Glendale's Youth Rugby Director Jenna Anderson has been voted Girls DII Coach of the Year.
Saturday's matches:
Game 1: SWARM vs. Regis - Division I: third place game (noon)
Game 2: Thunderhawks vs. Fort Collins - Division II championship (1:40 p.m.)
Game 3: Summit vs. Castle Rock - Division I championship (3:50 p.m.)
Division II Glendale Raptors U19 players recognized as all-state selections:
- Courtney Racine, junior at Thomas Jefferson High School
- Emily Jaynes, senior at East High School
- Anna McMinimee, freshman at Cherry Creek High School
- Jessica Gallegos, sophomore at Cherry Creek
- Katherine Woolley, senior at Cherry Creek
Coach Anderson started Glendale's girls high school team in 2009 with Raptor Women's player Paula Bailey and says that the team's third year, in third place overall, has been a big success. "This year has been the best by far for Glendale girls rugby. With a combination of the fantastic girls on our squad this year and the help from the rest of the coaches, we have built our strongest team yet."
The coaches supporting the squad of 23 girls include Paula Bailey, Robin Roberts, Jackson Thom, Jordan Nelson and John Oberly.
Jenna Anderson has played a big role in building the game of rugby in Colorado through the programs she's developed as Glendale’s youth rugby director. Glendale provides a growing number of opportunities for aspiring young rugby players including spring and fall after-school programs , Glendale Try League rugby , summer flag rugby, the Rugby Academy , and the new girls camp that was launched last summer.
She has also led outreach programs during the school year, bringing rugby to PE classes in Denver area-schools .
Coach Anderson's motto for the game she loves is, 'anybody who wants to play rugby can play.' She is pleased with the players recently recognized, "The all-state selections are spot on. Each of these girls are leaders and great athletes. We'll miss our seniors in 2012 but can't wait to hear about their collegiate rugby future."
The future of rugby is a hot topic in Colorado sports these days, and the women’s game is growing. The state championships at Infinity Park on Saturday are a great opportunity for young athletes to see how girls play the game in Rugbytown USA.
