NEW YORK -- Oklahoma continued its impressive run as the
No. 1 team in the nation, receiving all 65 first-place votes to claim the top
spot in The Associated Press college football poll.
Oklahoma (12-0), which collected 1,625 points, dismantled Texas Tech by a
56-25 score on Saturday and garnered every top vote from a panel of
broadcasters and sportswriters.
Oklahoma's 14th consecutive week at No. 1
marks the third longest run ever to begin the season.
The only teams to be top rated in more consecutive polls to start the season
are Florida State, which went wire-to-wire in 1999, and Nebraska, which had a
run of 15 straight No. 1 rankings in 1983.
Southern California (10-1), LSU (10-1), Michigan (10-2) and Georgia (9-2)
rounded out the top five. The Wolverines are coming off a huge 35-21 win
versus Big Ten foe and defending national champion Ohio State. USC, which is
on track for a national championship run, received 1,558 points.
Texas (9-2), Tennessee (9-2), Ohio State (10-2), Florida State (9-2) and Miami
(9-2) completed the top 10.
Florida was 11th, while Purdue placed 12th. Iowa finished 13th, followed by
Kansas State, Miami-Ohio, Washington State, Mississippi, Boise State, TCU and
Pittsburgh. The Horned Frogs were No. 10 last week but suffered their first
loss of the season (10-1) against Southern Mississippi.
Virginia Tech, Bowling Green, Oklahoma State, West Virginia and Nebraska
completed the poll.
No teams dropped out of the poll this week.
