Prosecutors: Decision In Bryant Case Won't Come This Week

EAGLE, Colo. -- A decision on whether to charge Los Angeles
Lakers star Kobe Bryant with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old
woman will not be announced until sometime next week, prosecutors
said Thursday.
Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert did not immediately
return a call, but his spokeswoman said there will be no word until
then.
Officials were waiting for the results of foresnic testing before making a final decision.
Bryant, 24, a five-time NBA All-Star, is accused of sexually assaulting
the woman at an area hotel June 30. Officials at the Lodge & Spa at
Cordillera in Edwards say Bryant, who was in Colorado for knee
surgery at a Vail clinic, was a guest there June 30-July 2.
Bryant's attorney said he is innocent.
Both Bryant and his accuser went to hospitals after the alleged
attack, authorities said.
Sheriff's deputies took Bryant to Valley View Hospital in
Glenwood Springs, about 40 miles west of the resort, early July 2.
Sheriff's detective Doug Winters declined to say why but said
Bryant was allowed to leave on his own because he had not been
charged.
The Rocky Mountain News reported that Bryant voluntarily gave DNA samples to sheriff's investigators and the samples were sent to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The samples were given at the Glenwood Springs hospital to avoid publicity.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Kim Andree would not say whether deputies
or someone else took the alleged victim to a hospital, or whether
she drove herself.
When contacted by The Associated Press on Thursday, the alleged
victim's father referred all questions to the district attorney.
Two Eagle teens described the alleged victim as outgoing and
likable.
"Every time I talked to her, she was a real sweetheart. She was
just really sweet to me," said Lauren McNeil, 15.
Delores Gomez, a junior at Eagle Valley High School, said she
admires Bryant but thinks of the alleged victim as a good person.
"Sometimes I'm on her side and sometimes I'm on his side," she
said.
Authorities have said they are treating Bryant like any other
suspect, though sheriff's investigators didn't reveal his arrest
until Sunday -- two days after he was released on bail.
Earlier this week, Sheriff Joe Hoy said investigators learned of
the assault allegation July 1. Andree has said investigators told
Bryant about the arrest warrant last Thursday, and he returned to
Colorado the next day to surrender and post $25,000 bail.
