The 19-year-old Colorado woman who accused Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant of sexual assault will come home from a family vacation to what Eagle County Sheriff Joe Hoy described as "mind-boggling" media attention.
Hoy confirmed the woman's age Tuesday and said she was on vacation with her family, but is expected to return this week.
Hoy said he was concerned about the pressure on the woman and frustrated that there was more attention on Bryant than on her."To me, the sad part is if this hadn't been who it involved, this wouldn't even be a blip on anyone's radar screen," he said. "Personally, I think they're focusing on our suspect rather than on the victim."He also said investigators have sent unspecified evidence to the state Bureau of Investigation for analysis, but refused to discuss other details of the case. A bureau official would only say the work has begun. The 24-year-old Bryant is accused of sexual misconduct and prosecutors are expected to decide by the end of the week whether to charge him with felony sexual assault.
Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert said the woman appears to be "doing OK considering the circumstances."Bryant's attorney, Pamela Mackey, said he is innocent and expects to be exonerated. She also lashed out against Hoy's department, calling it "biased and unfair" because it sought an arrest warrant through a judge instead of through the district attorney, which is the usual practice. Only the District Attorney's Office can file charges. "We were told that the matter was under consideration by the District Attorney's Office but that there was insufficient information to issue a warrant or to file charges," she said in a statement. An arrest warrant claimed Bryant assaulted the woman June 30 at a hotel. Officials at the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera in Edwards, near Vail, have confirmed Bryant stayed there June 30-July 2.
A source told 7NEWS that the woman works at the exclusive resort, but officials at Cordillera would not disclose any information.Bryant, a five-time NBA All-Star, surrendered to authorities Friday and was released after posting $25,000 bond. Mackey said Bryant was at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail for arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. The case was ordered sealed by Judge Russell Granger at the request of the sheriff and knowing that media scrutiny would be intense."I wanted to preserve the defendant's right to a fair trial," Granger said Tuesday.Last month, Bryant signed an endorsement deal with Nike, but company spokeswoman Celeste Alleyne said she could not comment about Bryant's future. "He's signed on with Nike and we are discussing the terms of his endorsement deal," Alleyne said. "We think he's a great player and that's all we can say until this situation is settled."Bryant lives in Los Angeles with his wife of three years, Vanessa Laine, and their infant daughter, Natalia. The allegations are a shock to his teammates and his legions of fans because Bryant has an image as a clean-cut, dignified, NBA celebrity, who does not stir up trouble. Since entering the NBA straight from high school at the age of 18, Bryant has drawn comparisons to the league's great players.Bryant's case unfolded as details of two other NBA players' legal troubles were released. Orlando Magic guard Darrell Armstrong was arrested after being accused of fighting with a female police officer outside a Florida nightclub, and Portland Trail Blazers' Damon Stoudamire was accused of trying to pass through an airport metal detector with marijuana.
