NHL Game Summary - Colorado At Columbus

POSTED: 8:49 pm MST December 5, 2009

(Sports Network) - Wojtek Wolski scored a goal and assisted on Chris Stewart's third-period tally that proved to be the game-winner, as the Colorado Avalanche held on to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-2, at Nationwide Arena.

Milan Hejduk also lit the lamp for the Avalanche, who won for just the second time in their last seven games. Peter Budaj, making his second straight start in place of netminder Craig Anderson, who remains day-to-day with a sore neck, turned aside 29 shots.

Jason Chimera appeared to score his second goal of the game for Columbus in the waning seconds of regulation, but it was ruled to have gone under the net and not between the two posts.

Jakub Voracek registered a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets, who have lost eight of nine. Steve Mason made 16 saves in defeat.

"We didn't give them very much," said Columbus head coach Ken Hitchcock. "We weren't hungry (in the first half of the game) like we were in the third period. In the second half of the game, we were real hungry to score."

Trailing 2-0, Chimera put Columbus on the board at the 4:19 mark of the third period, but Stewart restored a two-goal cushion 38 seconds later when he took a pass from Wolski and ripped a shot that deflected off the stick of Blue Jackets defenseman Marc Methot and slid between Mason's pads.

A wraparound bid from Voracek caromed in off the skate of Colorado's John- Michael Liles with 4:28 left.

Columbus' valiant comeback was nearly complete in the dying seconds. With the reigning Calder Trophy winner stationed on the bench, Chimera backhanded the puck at the side of the goal. However, the net was partially dislodged and the puck never crossed the goal line.

"I didn't know the net was off when it originally happened," said Colorado head coach Joe Sacco of the disallowed goal. "Then we got (word) from our video guy that it looked like the puck went underneath when the net came off. I was pretty relieved when I heard that."

Wolski tipped in Paul Stastny's centering from behind the enemy cage past Mason to open the scoring at 6:46 of the second period. Hejduk made it 2-0 with 4:39 remaining.
