Tiger Woods Released From Hospital With Facial Lacerations

POSTED: 12:23 am MST November 28, 2009

(Sports Network) - Tiger Woods, the No. 1 player in the world, was released from the hospital Friday after suffering facial lacerations in a one- car accident overnight.

Windermere, Fla. police say Woods pulled out of his driveway around 2:25 a.m. (et) on Friday before striking a fire hydrant and driving into a tree on his neighbor's property.

Woods' Web site said he was admitted, treated and released from a local hospital Friday in good condition.

"I think it's nothing more than an accident," said Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn. "From that standpoint, they've got to let everything run its full course and do the investigation to see what was involved."

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident, which was not reported until after 2 p.m. (et) on Friday. The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash is still under investigation.

Windermere police chief Daniel Saylor said Woods' wife, Elin Nordegren Woods, used a golf club to smash a window of his Cadillac Escalade to get the golfer out of the vehicle.

FHP troopers came to Woods' home Friday night to speak to the golfer about the accident. Woods' wife reportedly told the troopers that he was resting and instructed them to come back Saturday morning.

Woods, 33, the winner of 14 professional major golf titles, is scheduled to host and play next week in Thousand Oaks, California at the Chevron World Challenge, a tournament he has won four times. The $5.75 million event includes 12 of the top 20 players in the world and all 18 competitors are ranked in the top 34 in the world.

In a twist to the story, celebrity Web site TMZ.com reported Friday night that Woods spoke "with a non-law enforcement type" and noted the injuries to the golfer were not due to the accident, but instead were inflicted by his wife. The Web site reported Elin confronted her husband about a published report that Woods was seeing another woman. A source told TMZ that Elin scratched his face, and when Woods retreated for his SUV, Elin followed behind with a golf club and that she struck the vehicle several times.

The Web site also reported Woods became distracted when he thought the SUV was stopped, and then the vehicle hit the fire hydrant and the tree.
