Edwards, Johnson, Morris Capture Players Of The Week Honors

POSTED: 2:00 pm MST November 2, 2009

(Sports Network) - Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards, Eastern Washington linebacker Matt Johnson and Southern Illinois special teams performer Bryce Morris have been named The Sports Network's FCS national players of the week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Armanti Edwards, Appalachian State, SR, 6-0, 184, Quarterback, Greenwood, S.C.

Edwards piled up the fourth-highest, single-game total offense performance in Appalachian State history as the Mountaineers torched Furman, 52-27, Saturday on the road. Playing just three quarters, Edwards completed 25-of-36 passes for 355 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 10 times for 106 yards and four more scores. The 2008 Payton Award winner also became the first player in NCAA Division I history to exceed the 9,000-yard barrier in passing and the 4,000- mark in rushing for a career. Edwards now has 9,184 yards passing and 4,132 yards rushing for a career total offense figure of 13,316 yards. His total offense mark ranks him fourth in FCS history. It was the second time this season that Edwards has been named national player of the week.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Matt Johnson, Eastern Washington, SO, 6-1, 205, Linebacker, Tumwater, WA.

Johnson tied a Big Sky Conference record with four interceptions in Eastern Washington's 47-10 victory over Portland State at Seattle's Qwest Field. Johnson became the third player in league history to pick off four passes in a game, and the first in 20 years. He tied the mark held by Ed Cerkovnik of Montana (1977) and Mike Babb of Weber State (1989). Johnson picked off two passes in the first quarter. His third interception came in the second quarter and stopped a PSU scoring drive. Johnson added the fourth interception in the fourth quarter. Eastern Washington limited Portland State's run and shoot offense to 163 passing yards, one season after the Vikings had 623 passing yards in an upset of the Eagles. Johnson also registered two tackles.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Bryce Morris, Southern Illinois, Senior, 6-1, 215, Wide Receiver, Olathe, KS.

Morris helped Southern Illinois keep on track towards a possible Missouri Valley Football Conference title when he blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to spark a 21-0 second-quarter run in the Salukis' 33-0 victory over Indiana State Saturday on the road. With the Salukis leading just 14-0 late in the second quarter, Morris broke through the line and blocked a punt and returned it four yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0 with 2:22 remaining in the first half. Morris was also a major cog in the SIU offense during the day, hauling in a game-high four passes for 80 yards, including one 37 yarder.
