GAME NOTES: The Central Michigan Chippewas will attempt to continue their strong play against league foes when they take on the Bowling Green Falcons this Saturday afternoon in a Mid-American Conference tilt at Perry Stadium. The Chippewas opened their season with a loss to Arizona, but since then the team has racked up six straight wins, including a 34-23 decision over Western Michigan on Saturday. The win over the Broncos gave Central Michigan its fourth conference victory and also pushed the team's road ledger on the season to 3-1.
As for the Falcons, they have won back-to-back games, defeating Kent State (36-35) and most recently Ball State (31-17). With the two victories, the Falcons are now 3-4 on the year, but more importantly hold a 2-1 ledger in league play. The Falcons hold a 21-17 edge over Central Michigan in the all-time series, but the Chippewas snapped a five-game skid against Bowling Green with a 31-14 victory in the last meeting in 2006. The Chippewas had their way with Western Michigan, as the team collected 416 total yards, en route to the 11-point win. Central Michigan rumbled for 178 yards and two touchdowns in the contest, but the leaders on the ground for CMU were Antonio Brown and Dan LeFevour. Brown, who is a wideout, paced the team with 91 yards, while LeFevour, added 75 yards and one score on 14 totes. LeFevour also had a solid outing under center, as the quarterback completed 18-of-31 attempts for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Brown hauled in one of the two touchdown passes in the victory, but it was Bryan Anderson that led the receivers, with seven receptions for 133 yards. LeFevour has done it all for CMU and is not only leading the team with his arm, but also with his legs. After seven games, the senior has completed an amazing 69.7 percent of his passes for 1,549 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has added nine rushing touchdowns for the squad, and is also leading the way with 394 yards. Brown is second on the team with 233 rushing yards, but the wideout is much more valuable as a target for LeFevour and comes into this game with 43 receptions, 476 yards and six scores, all of which are team-highs. Although Central Michigan was victorious, the defense still had plenty of problems against the Broncos, especially defending the pass, as the Chippewas were torched for 410 yards and two scores through air. Fortunately the defense was able to contain WMU's ground game, limiting the opposition to just 87 yards on 3.3 yards per attempt. Although it was a lackluster effort, the defense has still played at a high level throughout the season and comes into this matchup holding teams to just 325.9 total ypg, and only 15.9 ppg. If there is a negative aspect of this defense, it would be its inability to create game-changing plays. CMU heads into this weekend with only six takeaways (three fumbles and three interceptions), but the team has been slightly better at pressuring opposing quarterbacks, racking up 14 sacks thus far. The Falcons soared past Ball State over the weekend, mainly because of the play of Tyler Sheehan, who threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Once again Sheehan looked in the direction of Freddie Barnes early and often, and once again the wideout had an outstanding performance, hauling in 10 passes for 160 yards, while also grabbing all three touchdown passes. Sheehan and Barnes have led this offense throughout the season, and both players are posting career numbers. In seven games Sheehan has thrown for 2,336 yards and 14 scores against four interceptions, while Barnes is leading the nation with 85 receptions and 882 yards, with eight touchdowns. For Bowling Green to continue to have success, the team will need the combination of Sheehan and Barnes to continue their sensational play, because the ground game has done very little up to this point of the year. So far the Falcons have been bottled up and come into this weekend averaging just 67.6 ypg on a mere 2.4 yards per attempt. Overall this unit is producing 408.7 total ypg, and that has translated into 25.6 ppg. Bowling Green surrendered 404 total yards in the win over the weekend, but still limited Ball State to just 17 points. BGSU limited the Cardinals to just 131 yards through the air, but had plenty of trouble stopping the run, surrendering 273 yards on 6.5 yards per attempt. Stopping the run has been a problem, as the team is being punished for 203.7 rushing ypg and out of the 25 touchdowns allowed by this defense, 16 have come via the run. Creating big plays has also been a problem for this unit, as the team comes into this weekend with just eight takeaways (four interceptions and four fumbles), and this unit has also struggled pressuring the quarterback, racking up just eight sacks on the year. The Falcons should put up some solid numbers through the air on Saturday, but the Chippewas are too strong on both sides of the football and should remain undefeated in league action.
