Venable Helps Pads Down Rockies

POSTED: 12:29 am MDT September 24, 2009

(Sports Network) - Will Venable went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, four runs batted in, and two runs scored to lead the San Diego Padres past the Colorado Rockies, 6-3, in the middle installment of a three-game set at Coors Field.

Tim Stauffer, who took a no-hitter into the fifth, gave up two runs on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Ryan Webb (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning of relief to record his first major league win while Heath Bell picked up his 40th save of the year.

Tony Gwynn Jr. drove in a run for the Padres, who have won four of their past five games.

Seth Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Rockies, who are four games ahead of the Braves and Giants in the NL wild card standings. Troy Tulowitzki and Todd Helton each knocked in a run in defeat. Colorado had an eight-game home winning streak snapped.

Jason Marquis (15-12) went 4 2/3 frames, allowing six runs -- five earned -- on five hits with six strikeouts and five walks to take the loss. He has dropped four of his last five decisions

"Win, lose or draw I'm not going to change the way I do my business," said Marquis. "I'm going to look at some film, see location of pitches and get better. That's all you can do."

The Rockies used a pair of walks to put men on first and second with one out in the first, but Tulowitzki flied out and Brad Hawpe went down swinging.

The Padres scored twice in the top of the second to take an early lead. Venable led things off with a homer to right-center field. Oscar Salazar and Nick Hundley walked and Gwynn hit an RBI single up the middle.

Stauffer walked the first two batters in the home half but settled down and retired the next three batters.

San Diego exploded for four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. Stauffer and Everth Cabrera singled, and Adrian Gonzalez walked to load the bases with one out. After Chase Headley went down swinging, Venable cleared the bases with a double to center. Marquis walked Salazar before being replaced by Matt Herges.

"He (Marquis) threw a first-pitch sinker down, he's a guy you want up in the zone," said Venable. "I was trying to be patient...he threw a fastball up and I was able to take it past him."

Herges walked Hundley to load the bases again and Venable scored when Gwynn reached base on Herges' error. Stauffer went down swinging to end the frame.

Colorado scored twice in the bottom half to cut the gap to four. Clint Barmes led off with a double to break up Stauffer's bid for a no-hitter. Barmes moved to third on pinch-hitter Eric Young Jr.'s groundout and scored on Smith's base hit. Dexter Fowler went down looking and Helton walked before Tulowitzki stroked a run-scoring single.

Webb took over on the mound for Stauffer and loaded the bases before getting Yorvit Torrealba to ground out to end the inning.

Helton's sacrifice fly in the seventh cut the deficit to 6-3.

Mike Adams tossed a scoreless 1 2/3 innings and Bell worked around a leadoff double in the ninth to secure the victory for San Diego.

Game Notes

Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez (left hamstring) missed the game. The Padres were without outfielder Edgar Gonzalez (left shoulder) and third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff (back/left calf)...Colorado is 10-7 this season against the Padres.
