Brandon Marshall Suspended After Practice Video Airs On 7NEWS

Exclusive Video Shows Marshall Punting Ball, Swatting Away Passes

Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels has suspended Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall after 7NEWS aired a video of his behavior during practice.

McDaniels met with Marshall Friday and informed him he was suspended through Sept. 5.

The move came after a 7NEWS video showed Marshall punting the football away during Wednesday's practice instead of handing it to a ball boy as players are instructed. The video also shows Marshall swatting passes away instead of catching them and walking while his teammates were running during warm-ups. (Note: 7NEWS had the video online but due to NFL regulations, it had to be removed late Friday.)

"He was given a warning this Wednesday about his conduct being detrimental to the club and his actions didn't really change after that warning and that leads us to today. And we went and followed up the warning with a suspension," McDaniels said.

McDaniels said the action was taken for the good of the football club.

"I have a great deal of respect for every single player in that locker room," he said. "They come to training camp, they work diligently to improve and every one of those men in there take their jobs seriously. Every time he's out there on the field all we're doing is coaching. Just like we are every other player out there ... Every player that goes out there on that field everyday is going to get coached the same way. I think it's going to take two sides that want to make this work, and want to get better and want to improve the relationship, to make it go. Will this change that? I hope so," McDaniels said. "Nobody wants to go through this again and I'm sure Brandon doesn't either."

"This is a game where you better put everything you have into it or you're going to be the reason that we lose," McDaniels said.

If it doesn't work out, McDaniels said he had high hopes for the team.

"We have good receivers here with him or without him," he said.

Marshall attempted to apologize for his actions during an interview with ESPN Thursday night.

"Me punting the ball was definitely frustration," Marshall said. "It was an error in judgment ... Unfortunately, I kind of let my frustration get the best of me."

But he also said the video is misleading.

"That was the start of practice and some of it was blown out of proportion," Marshall said. He said the video of him sitting down was before practice. He didn't explain why he batted the ball away during pass catching drills.

"I think everybody knows there's a lot of stuff built up there, and me handling it that way wasn't good," Marshall said.

Marshall was held out of the Broncos' preseason game at Seattle on Sunday night after admitting he didn't know the playbook. He also didn't play the Broncos' first preseason against San Francisco two weeks ago because he was on trial in Atlanta, where he was acquitted of a misdemeanor battery charge. He had been accused of beating his then-girlfriend.

Marshall has twice asked for a trade from the Broncos.

He told ESPN if he is not traded, "I will have to be professional about it."

Marshall, who had 206 receptions the past two seasons, also said he was frustrated with what he feels was the team's misdiagnosis of a hip injury that required off-season surgery. He pulled a hamstring during the first weekend of training camp and didn't return until a week ago.

His contract calls for him to be paid $2.2 million this season -- whether or not he plays.

People leaving comments on the DenverChannel Facebook page were unanimously against Marshall's actions.

Cherrlyn "Cheri" Brockington said, "Brandon is a moron. No other words needed."

Melissa Williams Scofield posted, "What a big baby."

7NEWS also found a faux craigslist ad saying "For sale: One slightly used, partially dinged up, occasionally unreliable, extremely agitated, currently insubordinate Brandon Marshall receiver!"
