Cubs Sneak By Marquis, Rockies

POSTED: 10:45 pm MDT August 8, 2009

(Sports Network) - Kosuke Fukudome's solo home run in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the difference, as the Chicago Cubs fended off the Colorado Rockies, 6-5, in the second contest of a four-game series at Coors Field.

Fukudome added an RBI double for the Cubs, who have won 11 of their last 16 games. Ryan Theriot went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Derrek Lee also homered.

Ryan Dempster (6-5) gave up five runs -- two earned -- on nine hits in six- plus innings to get his first win since returning from the disabled list. Carlos Marmol struck out the side in the eighth and Kevin Gregg tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his 22nd save.

"We just keep fighting," Dempster said. "After all we have been through, we have been through a lot of adversity this year. We're just on a journey trying to get back to where we were last year."

Omar Quintanilla had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Rockies, who have dropped three of four. Clint Barmes clubbed a solo home run in defeat.

Jason Marquis (12-8) yielded five runs on eight hits and five walks over six innings to take the loss.

"I am not going to reinvent the wheel," said Marquis. "I am just going to work hard like I have the last ten years of my career. I have just hit a bump in the road, that's all it is."

Lee walked to begin the fourth and scored on Fukudome's one-out double. Marquis then endured some control problems after Alfonso Soriano was retired on a pop up. He issued three consecutive walks to Geovany Soto, Aaron Miles and Dempster to force in another run.

Colorado countered in the bottom of the inning. The first four batters reached base, with Brad Hawpe's single to left field scoring Carlos Gonzalez. Another run came home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Ian Stewart. Quintanilla then delivered with two outs, driving a pitch the other way to left for a two- run single and 4-2 Rockies lead.

Chicago got a run back in the fifth on Lee's one-out blast to right field, then pulled ahead in the next inning. Miles lined a one-out triple to center and scored on Theriot's base hit. Theriot swiped second and Milton Bradley drilled a pitch over the head of Hawpe in right. Theriot was able to cross the plate before Bradley was tagged out at second to end the frame.

Fukudome and Barmes traded solo blasts in the seventh.
