Rockies Blast Padres

POSTED: 11:39 pm MDT July 16, 2009

(Sports Network) - Aaron Cook pitched six solid innings and Clint Barmes drilled a three-run homer, as the Colorado Rockies crushed the San Diego Padres, 10-1, in the opener of a four-game series at Petco Park.

Seth Smith hit a two-run homer and Dexter Fowler drove in two runs for the Rockies, who began the unofficial second half of the season with their sixth win in their last eight games overall.

Cook (9-3) allowed one run on eight hits with eight strikeouts and earned the win while Todd Helton finished 4-for-5 with a run scored for the Rockies.

Kevin Kouzmanoff drove in the only run for the Padres, who have dropped eight of their last nine contests. Chase Headley went 3-for-4 with a walk.

Chad Gaudin (4-8) suffered the loss after he allowed four runs -- one earned -- on four hits with eight strikeouts in five innings.

The Padres opened the scoring in the first via Kouzmanoff's RBI single, but a bases-loaded walk to Cook in the top of the second knotted the score.

In the fourth, the Rockies grabbed a 3-1 lead on a two-run single by Fowler.

A groundout off the bat of Troy Tulowitzki in the fifth scored Smith, who earlier in the inning walked and moved to third on a single by Helton.

The Rockies put the game out of reach in the sixth inning. With Michael Ekstrom on the hill for San Diego, Carlos Gonzalez stroked a one-out single and Fowler drew a walk before Barmes belted a three-run homer over the wall in left field for a 7-1 advantage.

Chris Iannetta's sacrifice fly in the seventh added another run for Colorado.

The scoring was capped in the top of the eighth on a two-run homer by Smith.

Prior to the game, the Rockies activated reliever Manny Corpas from the 15-day disabled list. He had been sidelined since June 19 due to bone spurs in his right elbow. Corpas pitched the ninth inning.
