Rockies Try To Stretch Win Streak To Seven In Clash With Brewers

(Sports Network) - For the Colorado Rockies, a change appears to have done a world of good.

The rejuvenated club aims to continue its recent turnaround under new manager Jim Tracy and shoots for a seventh consecutive win in tonight's clash with the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

Colorado was 18-28 and buried at the bottom of the National League West standings when the organization decided to fire longtime skipper Clint Hurdle on May 29. The Rockies lost four of their first six games under the direction of Tracy, a former manager of the Dodgers and Pirates, before this current tear, the franchise's longest winning streak since it ripped off 11 straight victories near the end of the 2007 season.

Each of Colorado's six straight wins have come on the road, including an impressive four-game sweep of St. Louis over the weekend in which Tracy's troops outscored the Cardinals by a 33-9 margin. The Rockies kept rolling in Tuesday's opener of this three-game set, scoring three times in the seventh inning to rally for a 3-2 decision over the NL Central-leading Brewers.

Trailing 2-0 after six innings, the Rockies cut the deficit in half on back- to-back doubles from Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez. Dexter Fowler later brought home Gonzalez with a two-bagger off Todd Coffey (1-1) to tie the score, and Clint Barmes knocked in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.

The comeback made a winner of Jason Hammel (3-3), who limited the Brewers to two runs on five hits while striking out five over the first six innings. Three Rockies relievers teamed up to protect the one-run edge, with Huston Street tossing a perfect ninth to close out the win.

"That's a great game for us to win against a first-place team," said Tracy. "I think the great thing about the last 8-10 days is that (his players) are having success and that their confidence is growing."

Mat Gamel had a solo homer for the Brewers, who received six solid innings out of starter Braden Looper. The veteran righty allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out seven batters while not factoring in the decision.

The Brewers have now lost two in a row, but lead the NL Central by 2 1/2 games over a pack of three teams.

Milwaukee will try to get back on track tonight against Jorge De La Rosa, a one-time Brewer who is just 1-6 in 11 starts so far this season. That lone win did come in his last start, however, when the previously-struggling lefty gave up three runs and fanned seven over 6 2/3 innings to defeat the Cardinals last Friday.

De La Rosa had lost three straight starts prior to Friday's breakthrough and had been rocked for 18 runs in 12 innings over that span.

The 28-year-old broke into the majors with Milwaukee in 2004 and spent parts of three seasons as a member of the Brewers, pitching primarily in relief. He is 0-2 with an unwanted 13.03 earned run average in three appearances (2 starts) against his former club.

Dave Bush gets the mound assignment for Milwaukee this evening and hopes to put an end to a rough recent stretch. After posting a 3-0 record with a 3.74 ERA over his first nine outings of the season, the right-hander has gone 0-2 with a 7.02 ERA during his last three starts and surrendered four or more runs in each of those games.

Bush's struggles continued in Thursday's 4-3 loss at Florida, where he was reached for all four Marlins runs in six innings of work. His control has been off as well lately, as the 29-year-old has issued nine walks in 16 2/3 innings over his three-start winless streak. Bush had walked only 11 batters in his first nine appearances of the year.

He does have a history of success against Colorado, however, having amassed a 2-1 record with a 2.50 ERA in three previous meetings with the Rockies. Bush racked up a career-high 13 strikeouts in beating Colorado at Miller Park last July, a game in which he yielded just one unearned run in eight innings.

Colorado won four of seven 2008 encounters against the Brewers, with the teams splitting a four-game series at Miller Park last July.
