Padres Use Late RBI Single To Top Rockies In Denver

POSTED: 11:15 pm MDT April 28, 2009

(Sports Network) - Pinch-hitter Luis Rodriguez's RBI single in the top of the ninth inning proved to be the difference, as the San Diego Padres snuck past the Colorado Rockies, 4-3, in the middle installment of a three- game series at Coors Field.

With Nick Hundley on third and one out in the top of the ninth, Rodriguez squeezed a base hit between first and second base to score the eventual winning run.

"He throw me a little slider, and I hit (it)," Rodriguez said.

Scott Hairston had a two-run home run for the Padres, who snapped a three-game skid. Chase Headley had the other RBI for San Diego.

Chad Gaudin started on the mound for the Padres and pitched a solid scoreless five innings, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts in the no- decision. Duaner Sanchez (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth to pick up the win. Heath Bell tossed a scoreless ninth to collect his eighth save of the year.

Seth Smith had a solo home run for the Rockies, who have lost four of their past six games. Ryan Spilborghs and Todd Helton each had an RBI in the loss.

Jorge De La Rosa toed the rubber for the Rockies and lasted six frames, giving up two runs on three hits with six strikeouts. Manny Corpas (0-2) allowed one run on two hits in the ninth to take the loss.

The Rockies were without the services of outfielder Brad Hawpe, who was hit in the neck on a pickoff throw from Padres catcher Todd Hundley during Colorado's 12-7 victory on Monday. A CT scan was negative and Hawpe is listed day-to-day with a neck contusion.

"We know there is going to be more offense, we know the bullpen is going to get better. You know, the sledding is a little difficult right now, but we have got to stay focused on what we can control," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said.

With the scored tied 3-3, Corpas came on for Colorado in the top of the ninth. Hundley welcomed Corpas with a triple down the right-field line. Chris Burke grounded out for the first out but Luis Rodriguez singled to right to drive in Hundley. Corpas retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Bell closed it out in the ninth.

San Diego used a two-run homer from Hairston in the third to take an early 2-0 edge. Chris Burke singled to left and advanced to second on Gaudin's bunt before Hairston drove a slider over the left-field wall.

The Rockies used a solo shot from Smith in the sixth to cut their deficit in half. Edward Mujica started the frame on the hill and retired the first two batters before Smith came to the plate. Smith drove a 1-1 slider over the right-field wall.

The Padres had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh, but Matt Belisle got pinch-hitter Jody Gerut to go down swinging and Hairston to ground out.

Colorado plated a pair of runs in the home half of the inning to go ahead 3-2. Luke Gregerson took over on the mound and got Yorvit Torrealba to go down swinging. Troy Tulowitzki, Dexter Fowler, Spilborghs, and Helton followed with four consecutive singles, respectively. Tulowitzki and Fowler scored during the parade of base hits. Garrett Atkins hit into a double play to end the frame.

San Diego responded with a run in the eighth to deadlock the contest. With Alan Embree pitching, David Eckstein doubled to left. Embree retired the next two batters, but gave up an RBI single to Headley. Huston Street then took over on the hill and got Kevin Kouzmanoff to fly out to prevent further damage.

The Rockies loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Sanchez got Tulowitzki to ground into a double play to keep the contest tied.
