Calhoun Gets New Five-Year Deal From Air Force

POSTED: 1:01 pm MST January 21, 2009

(Sports Network) - Air Force Academy announced on Wednesday that it has signed head football coach Troy Calhoun to a new five- year contract that runs through the 2013 season.

The Falcons have gone 17-9 in two seasons with Calhoun at the helm and have appeared in back-to-back bowl games. They participated in the Armed Forces Bowl in both 2007 and 2008, losing to California two years ago before getting dealt a 34-28 loss by Houston on December 31.

Calhoun's nine wins in his first season with Air Force tied the school record for most victories by a first-year head coach, matching the mark set by Ben Martin in 1958. The Falcons went 8-5 this past year and finished fourth in the Mountain West Conference with a 5-3 mark.

"We are delighted that coach Calhoun has agreed to another five-year contract as the head football coach at the Air Force Academy," director of athletics Dr. Hans Mueh said. "We have structured a program of compensation that will continue to reward coach Calhoun and his staff for long-term commitment to Air Force football.

"He and the entire football staff are the perfect role models for our future Air Force leaders and represent the best ideals of college football in America."

Prior to becoming Air Force's head coach, Calhoun spent four seasons in the NFL, serving on the coaching staff of the Denver Broncos from 2003-05 before a role as the Houston Texans' offensive coordinator in 2006.

The school also announced that it has agreed to new contracts with its football assistant coaches, though the details are still being worked out.
