Anthony, Nuggets Edge Clippers

POSTED: 12:29 am MST November 27, 2008

(Sports Network) - Carmelo Anthony dropped a season-high 30 points and grabbed 11 boards as the Denver Nuggets escaped with a 106-105 victory over the struggling Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center.

Kenyon Martin also logged a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Nene netted 17 and snagged nine boards for Denver, which has won six of its last seven.

Linas Kleiza chipped in 15 points and Anthony Carter 13 to go along with six assists in the victory.

"I wanted to be aggressive tonight and get the offense going," Anthony said. "We've been playing good defense. Ten wins in the first month is a good start for us."

Rookie Eric Gordon, who made his first NBA start on Monday -- pouring in a career-best 25 points in a loss to New Orleans -- started for a second straight game and went for 24 to go along with five rebounds, four steals and as many assists.

Baron Davis had 18 points and 10 assists for the Clippers, losers of four in a row and 13 of 15 to start the season, their worst start since the lockout- shortened 1998-99 campaign when the team started 0-17.

Marcus Camby had 17 points and 11 rebounds while Al Thornton scored 14 in the loss.

Zach Randolph and guard Mardy Collins, who were acquired from the New York Knicks last week for Tim Thomas and Cuttino Mobley, each made their Clippers debut in the loss. Randolph had seven points on 3-of-11 shooting with four boards in a little under 26 minutes while Collins went scoreless in limited action.

Concerns over a Mobley heart condition delayed the completion of the trade and neither Randolph nor Collins was able to suit up in the last three games -- all LA losses -- since the deal was announced.

"I thought Zach struggled a little and couldn't find his zone. He's a competitor and he'll get the job done," said Clips coach Ken Hughes, who was filling in for Mike Dunleavy as he was away from the team attending his father-in-law's funeral.

LA kept chipping away at Denver's lead throughout the fourth and a 9-2 spurt got the Clippers to within three with 3 1/2 minutes remaining when Gordon capped the run with a dunk.

Anthony hit three free throws and drove for a layup to push the Nuggets' lead to eight but the Clips reeled off eight straight points with Gordon's three- ball tying the game at 103-103.

Anthony came back and nailed a jumper on the other end and a Davis miss led to a foul on Martin, who sank a free throw to make it 106-103 with 42.4 seconds left.

Randolph drove for two on the other end for a one-point game with 39.5 seconds left and Denver ran down the shot clock before Carter found only rim on a three. Davis ran the floor with under 10 seconds left with a chance for the win and tossed it back to Camby at the top of the key, but his three-point attempt fell short, brushing harmlessly off the front of the rim and the Nuggets escaped with the win.

"I don't like calling timeouts in that situation," Hughes added. "I don't want to give their defense time to set up. I don't like losing but I liked what I saw -- I saw a little chemistry with our group."

Denver jumped out to a 32-22 lead after one quarter but the Clips battled back in the second quarter. Down by 11 with 5 1/2 minutes to play, LA went on a 9-0 run to pull within one, and Davis later drained a three inside 20 seconds to keep the deficit at one at the break, 56-55.

The Nuggets came back with a solid third frame and led 79-71 heading into the fourth.

Game Notes

The Nuggets have won five straight and seven of their last eight meetings against the Clippers...LA is off until Saturday when they host Miami...Denver heads home to welcome the Hornets on Thursday...Clippers center Chris Kaman played one quarter, and did not play the rest of the game because of a sore foot.
